Container FAQ

Common questions about returning containers at Sandgate Bottles & Cans Exchange.

What condition do my containers have to be in to be eligible?

Containers must be empty. You do not have to rinse each container, but it will help you store them cleanly before returning them. Caps should be removed from bottles because they are usually a different plastic type.

How will I receive my refund?

You can receive your refund on the spot in cash. If you have registered with Containers for Change, we can deposit the refund straight into your bank account. You can also donate your refund to a local community group using their scheme ID.

Do I have to sort my containers before bringing them in?

No, you do not have to sort containers before bringing them in, although sorting by material type may save time when you visit.

What happens to containers once they are returned?

Containers deposited at Sandgate BCEX are sorted by material type and prepared for transport to a processing centre. Materials are compacted and recycled into new materials or beverage containers.

Why are some drink containers not eligible for a refund?

The scheme focuses on beverage containers most commonly consumed outside the home. Some ineligible containers are difficult to process or fall outside the scheme rules. Many can still be recycled through local government recycling programs.
